Cruising via the many lakes through the ‘Green Heart’ of Holland, passing reed islands and unspoiled nature you will discover an oasis of peace amidst the ‘Randstad’. You will be impressed by the water flora and the abundance of waterfowl arround on the ‘Braassemermeer’, ‘Kagerplassen’, de ‘Nieuwkoopse Plassen’ en de ‘Westeinder Plassen’. To relax you can cruise to ‘Katwijk aan Zee‘ and spend a day at the beach. At springtime the ‘Keukenhof in Lisse‘ with its beautiful flower parks is certainly worth a visit.

Today you start in ‘Woubrugge’. Across the ‘Heimanswetering’ and the ‘Oude Rijn’ towards ‘Zwammerdam’. At ‘Zwammerdam’ you can ascent the ‘Nieuwkoopse Plassen’. Haven of peace in the ‘Randstad’. You’ll get fascinated by the water flora and the call of our many water and grassland birds.
The many islands with unique flora and fauna show that this is not for nothing a conservation area. ‘Natuurmonumenten’ manages four free berths on the ‘Nieuwkoopse plassen‘ (up to 3 times 24 hours uninterrupted mooring allowed): ‘De Schepengaten’ – ‘Machinesloot’ – ‘Brampjesgat’ – ‘De Kleine Polder’. Of course, you can also moore in ‘Nieuwkoop’ itself.
woerden_001If you are new to boating, we advise you to skip the ‘Nieuwkoopse plassen‘ and visit ‘Woerden‘ instead. Since the passage into or out of the ‘Nieuwkoop Plassen’ is experienced as very narrow (4m.).

On the other side of the ‘Nieuwkoopse Plassen‘ (east-side) you can exit these waters through the ‘Kollensloot’. You can continue your cruise across the ‘Kromme Mijdrecht’ towards ‘Uithoorn’. At the dock you will find some restaurants and shops. Around ‘Uithoorn‘ are several forts that were part of the ‘Stelling of Amsterdam’.
For newby’s who decided to cruise via ‘Woerden‘ : Starting ‘Woerden‘ you cruiser the ‘Grecht’ towards ‘Woerdens Verlaat’. From there you cruise to ‘Uithoorn‘ and continue the route as described below.

From ‘Uithoorn‘ you cruise along the jagged twists of the ‘Amstel’, the ‘Drecht‘ and the ‘Ringvaart van de Haarlemmermeerpolder’ towards the ‘Westeinder Plassen’ (‘Aalsmeer’).
Near the “Oosteinderpoel” at the “Ringvaart”, about two kilometers from the “Bosrandbrug”, is the so-called ‘Recreatiesteunpunt van Stichting de Bovenlanden’. This place offers room for about ten ships. From this place, you can take a nice walk, visit a beautiful mill and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The adjacent bicycle and walking path is part of the long-distance route the Pilgrims path.
The public moorings are primarily intended for daily recreation. Still, you may use the berths to stay in your boat. You can install up to 48 hours in the same island.

Today you cruise back across the ‘Ringvaart van de Haarlemmermeerpolder’ to the ‘Kagerplassen’ (‘Leiden’).
The ‘Kagerplassen’ is a natural area where it’s very pleasant especially during summer days. Around the ‘Kaag’, the ‘Braassem’ and ‘Wijde Aa’ are marinas for boaters present and there are many terraces located near the water. This area is characterized also by the many mills in the landscape that are easy to see from the water.
From ‘Kagerplassen’ it is a must to go ashore on the picturesque island of ‘De Kaag’. ‘De Kaag’ is a good base for a delicious lunch, picnic or for a drink at one of the many terraces on the water.

From ‘Kagerplassen’ you travel onwards through ‘Leiden‘ across the ‘Nieuwe vaart of Rijn- Schiekanaal’ towards ‘Voorschoten’.
Through the ‘Korte Vlietkanaal’ and the ‘Rijn’ you will arrive in ‘Katwijk aan Zee’.
You can stay the night in ‘Jachthaven Katwijk’. This marina is on walking-distance of the beach and the Centre. ‘Katwijk’is son, sea and beach, but also wander endlessly through the dunes, a variety of museums and historical sites, shopping right behind the boulevard and at the end of the day settle down on one of the many terraces or dine in an excellent (fish) restaurant.

It is the same way back to ‘Leiden’ through the ‘Rijn’ and ‘Nieuwe vaart of Rijn- Schiekanaal’. Today you will stay the night in ‘Leiden‘. If you do not arrive too late, you can moore in the centre of this town.
There are 35 groups of almshouses in the city centre of Leiden. One for one, these almshouses complexes are idyllic places, where the noise of the town is shut out and where it is as if the time has stood still.
You can also visit the ‘Keukenhof’ from ‘Leiden’. You can take ‘bus 57? from the Central Station of ‘Leiden‘ to busstop ‘Leidsevaart – Lisse’. It is a 10-minute walk from here.

On the final day of your tour, you travel back across the ‘Oude Rijn’ to ‘Woubrugge‘.
If you have plenty of time left, you can also cruise the ‘Braassemermeer’ and the ‘Wijde AA’. If you have booked a boat with a weekly departure on friday-afternoon, you can consider to stay the first night on the ‘Braassemermeer’. The islands ‘De Hemmen’ is a beautiful location for you first night. (From ‘Woubrugge‘ to the ‘Braassemermeer‘ is about 1 hour by boat.)
