A former island is located in the middle of North Holland and 10 kilometers from the bustling center of Alkmaar. There are several villages on this former island, including De Rijp. You will not find mass tourism here. You will find peace, space, nature, beautiful monuments and of course cozy cafes and nice museums
De Rijp experienced a huge boom in the early 17th century thanks to herring fishing. In 1650, a third harbor was dug in De Rijp for approximately 75 herring tubes. Grafter and Rijper shipowners were looking for more expansion and found it in whaling. Around 1680 the whaling fleet consisted of 19 Greenland sailors. In the atmosphere of many 16th century shipowners’ houses and workers’ houses with its famous lock, Grote Kerk and Dambrug, Jan Adriaanszn. Leeghwater designed a town hall of allure on behalf of the village council. His image can be found in front of the town hall as a bust and in the council chamber as a portrait. Museum In ‘t Houten Huis offers an overview of the rich history of Schermereiland and its seafaring inhabitants. Where the water became land, but the wooden houses remained. The museum has exhibitions about history, culture and art.
Port for overnight stay Watersportvereniging Eilandspolder can be found in De Rijp. A small, cozy harbor that is equipped with all facilities. The shops, restaurants, museums, bus station and the 17th century village are within walking distance of the harbour.
